Standard 1
Teachers know the subjects they are teaching.
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.

Evidence1:

Rationale 1: In today’s technological world, teaching writing can be quite challenging. To my writing classes, I clearly stress the definition and types of plagiarism. This evidence outlines a lesson plan that I use in all 11th grade Intermediate Composition classes. It involves a quiz that allows the students to analyze what is and isn’t plagiarism and a YouTube video that shows different types of plagiarism in an informative and humorous manner. Plagiarism can be quite questionable for high school students, so as a teacher, I need to stay informed and in turn inform my students of acceptable writing. My students were quite surprised at some of the less conspicuous forms and the penalties involved when writers are caught plagiarizing.

KSD:
1.K. 2 The teacher understands how students’ conceptual frameworks and their misconceptions for an area of knowledge can influence their learning.
Technology allows students to use many online sources for educational purposes. What they do not understand is what plagiarism really is. I clearly demonstrate the forms of plagiarism in today’s world and help my students overcome their misconceptions.

1.S.3 The teacher can evaluate teaching resources and curriculum materials for their comprehensiveness, accuracy, and usefulness in representing particular ideas and concepts.
I need to constantly remind my students not to plagiarize. Instead of just giving them a typewritten list showing examples of plagiarism, I am able to evaluate technological resources for aids in teaching the curriculum. My students respond to updated methods and critical thinking methods.

1.D.3 The teacher has enthusiasm for the discipline(s) s/he teaches and sees connections to everyday life.
Students today are connected to the digital world. Using YouTube to teach plagiarism reaches out to those students. The content of what they learn connects to their everyday lives.
